Auto body dent repair in Spring Valley

Dents range from round parking lot dings to sharp creased damage from collisions. The repair approach, cost, and time vary significantly by dent type, panel location, and whether the paint cracked. We assess every dent before recommending the right technique.

Understanding dent types and the right repair for each

Round dents with smooth edges and no paint cracking are the ideal candidates for paintless dent repair (PDR). PDR uses precision metal rods and reflector boards to slowly massage the metal back to its original shape from behind the panel. The process preserves the factory paint completely and leaves no filler or paint seams. Not every round dent qualifies, though: if the dent is too deep, is on a crease line, or is on a panel with limited access from behind, PDR cannot achieve a satisfactory result.

Sharp crease dents from collisions or door edges involve metal that has been stretched and folded. Creases cannot simply be pushed out because the metal on one side of the crease has thinned while the other side has thickened. These dents require traditional bodywork: the panel is worked from both sides, low spots are filled with two-part body filler applied in thin layers, blocked flat, primed, and then painted. Done correctly, this produces a panel surface that is as flat as factory to within a thousandth of an inch.

Door edges and rocker panel dents are particularly common because these areas have the least metal thickness. Door edge dents frequently crack the paint because the metal folds sharply. Once the paint cracks, the repair requires filling and painting regardless of dent depth, because bare metal at the paint crack will rust within months in coastal Southern California humidity.

The threshold for panel replacement versus repair depends on the cost of repair relative to the cost of a replacement panel. For bolt-on panels like doors and fenders, a new or quality used panel is sometimes cheaper than the labor to repair severe damage. For welded panels like quarter panels and pillars, repair is almost always the right choice because replacement means cutting and welding. We give you the cost of both options when the decision is close.

    Repairs included

    • PDR for round dents without paint damage
    • Traditional body filler and block-sand repair for creases
    • Door edge dent repair with paint
    • Rocker panel dent repair
    • Hood and trunk lid dent repair
    • Roof dent repair including hail arrays
    • Panel replacement when repair cost exceeds part cost
    • Bare metal rust treatment before primer
    • Color-matched paint and clear coat
    • Post-repair paint surface inspection under shop lights
    Why it matters

Any paint crack in a dent exposes bare metal that begins to rust within weeks in Southern California's coastal air. Addressing the dent with a proper repair stops that corrosion before it spreads under the surrounding paint.

    How the repair works

    Dent assessment and technique selection

We inspect the dent under a reflector board to measure depth, check paint integrity, and confirm whether PDR or traditional repair is the right method.

    Panel access and metalwork

For PDR, we access the panel from behind. For traditional repair, we work the metal from both sides before applying filler.

    Filling, blocking, and priming

For non-PDR repairs, we apply filler in thin coats, block-sand to a flat surface, and apply sealing primer before painting.

    Paint, clear coat, and inspection

We apply color-matched base coat and clear coat, then inspect the finished panel under shop lights at multiple angles.

    FAQ

Common questions about auto body dent repair

If the paint is intact, the dent is round rather than creased, and there is access to the back of the panel, PDR is likely an option. We can tell you definitively in about five minutes by looking at the dent under a reflector board.

When done correctly by a trained technician, PDR leaves no visible trace. The metal returns to its original position and the factory clear coat is undisturbed. The only way to detect a PDR repair afterward is to measure the paint thickness, which shows no filler layer.

High-quality two-part polyester filler applied in thin layers over properly prepared bare metal does not crack or shrink under normal conditions. Failures happen when filler is applied too thick, over paint rather than bare metal, or over a panel that flexes. We follow application thickness guidelines on every repair.

Roof dents require access through the interior headliner, which adds time. They are otherwise repaired the same way as any other panel. Roof dents from hail often cover a large area and are assessed as a group for PDR suitability.

Yes, doing multiple dents in one visit is more cost-effective than separate visits because the setup, masking, and paint-mixing labor is shared across all the dents. We give a combined quote for multi-panel work.
