Every vehicle leaves the factory with a paint code stamped on a build sticker, usually located on the door jamb, under the hood, or in the trunk. That code corresponds to a specific formula of tints mixed into a base. The formula gives the starting point, but it is not the final answer. Factory paint lines run slightly differently on different production days, and years of sunlight change the hue of the paint on the car. We read the existing paint with a spectrophotometer to measure the actual color on the vehicle, then adjust the mix formula to match what is on the car rather than what was in the factory bucket.

Metallic and pearl paints add another layer of complexity because the aluminum or mica flakes in those paints orient differently depending on how they are applied. Spray pressure, distance, temperature, and gun speed all affect whether the flake lays flat or stands at an angle. A flat-lying flake produces a darker appearance; an upright flake appears lighter. Getting the metallic to match requires test panels and sometimes adjustments to the application technique rather than just the mix formula.

Two-tone and tri-coat paint systems, common on many luxury and premium vehicles, layer a base color, one or more translucent mid-coats, and a clear coat. Each coat affects the final color. A repair on a tri-coat requires rebuilding all three layers in the correct sequence and thickness. Skipping the mid-coat or applying it at the wrong thickness shifts the hue significantly.

Blending is the technique of feathering new paint into adjacent panels so the eye cannot find the edge of the new paint. The clear coat is sprayed beyond the color boundary, and the edge is machine-polished to eliminate any texture difference. A well-executed blend is invisible even when the vehicle is viewed under direct sunlight from multiple angles.
