Every vehicle has a published reference chart, and we compare each measurement to that chart.
Frame straightening uses a pull tower anchored to the shop floor. Hydraulic rams and chains attach to the frame at specific pull points. The technician applies controlled tension while monitoring the computerized measuring system in real time. The goal is not just to make the metal look straight but to bring every datum point within the manufacturer's tolerance, which is typically plus or minus two to three millimeters.
Some damage cannot be straightened because the metal has work-hardened through multiple bends or the crush zone has collapsed beyond its designed recovery range. In those cases we section the rail, cutting out the damaged section and welding in a new piece. The weld must meet OEM specification for tensile strength, and the section must align to the same datum points as a factory rail.

It depends on how far the damage has spread and which rail is affected. Minor deformation in a designed crush zone may not compromise immediate drivability, but any frame damage that affects suspension mounting points makes the vehicle unsafe until repaired.
Not automatically. Insurance companies compare repair cost to actual cash value. Straightening a mildly bent unibody rail can cost less than many people expect. A sectioning repair on a severely damaged rail costs more. We provide a written estimate so you can compare it to your vehicle's value.
A correctly straightened crush zone that returns to factory datum measurement performs as designed in a subsequent collision. A sectioned rail with a certified weld also meets factory tensile strength specifications. We do not release vehicles until the post-repair measurements match factory tolerances.
