Why quarter panel repair is different from fender repair

This welded attachment means the panel cannot simply be unbolted and replaced. Repair requires either straightening the existing panel or cutting and welding in a new section.
Quarter panel straightening is the preferred approach for moderate damage because it preserves the factory weld seams and does not introduce new weld joints into the structure. The panel is accessed from inside the wheel arch and the trunk area, and specialized shrinking and stretching tools move the metal back to its original contour. The result is a panel with no additional welds and factory thickness throughout.
When a quarter panel has been severely collapsed or has sharp creases near the wheel arch, sectioning becomes necessary. We cut the damaged section out, leaving factory welds intact where possible, and weld in a new outer skin section. The weld seam is placed in the most structurally appropriate location, usually along the edge of the wheel arch or the lower rocker area, and finished so it is invisible after paint.
Quarter panel damage frequently extends to the rear door opening flange, the trunk lip, and the wheel arch lip. These flanges affect door alignment and trunk weather sealing. This is more labor-intensive and expensive than repairing or sectioning, and it introduces more new weld seams into the structure. Most collision repairers, including us, reserve full replacement for catastrophic damage where the inner structure behind the quarter is also damaged.
If you can see a clear fold or crease in the metal near the wheel arch, or if the rear door no longer opens and closes smoothly, the damage is likely significant enough for sectioning. Bring it in and we will assess the extent before quoting.
